Just 14 hours after it was reported that the United States would release $13.5 billion in funds to support Israel in its ongoing genocide in Gaza, an IDF attack on a school in the northern portion of the strip killed over 100 displaced Palestinians who were sheltering in a school.
“The US & allies are claiming a ceasefire is near. But all Palestinians see is more death, dislocation, & despair. The genocide continues,” James Zogby, co-founder and president of the Arab American Institute, wrote on social media.
“It past time to end the charade. Israel doesn’t want peace or a ceasefire. Why are we still sending Israel weapons?”
Saturday morning, CNN journalist Allegra Goodwin tweeted that the bomb used on the school was a “US-made GBU-39 small diameter bomb”, a claim that hasn’t been able to be verified by outlets outside of CNN.
Israel has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they were targeting 20 Hamas fighters who were supposedly at the school. However, Palestinian Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal reported that around 350 displaced families were sheltering inside during the attack.
The attack has been widely condemned by the international community and has renewed calls for a ceasefire from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. However, as long as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to sabotage the peace process, and as long as the United States keeps issuing blank checks for genocide, a serious end to the bloodshed seems to be a pipedream at this point.
