Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis cop who murdered George Floyd in broad daylight in May of 2020 received a sentence today that can be described as nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Chauvin to 22.5 years in prison which I’m assuming will be reduced by at least a year with time served and is a little more than half of the maximum sentence of 40-years he could have faced for second-degree murder.
The aforementioned above tweet is really telling. If George Floyd didn’t literally have the life choked out of him by Chauvin, you can probably bet he would’ve been spending years in prison for supposedly trying to pass a counterfeit bill. And yes, Chauvin getting convicted and sentenced is historical in the sense that cops rarely face any type of judicial punishment for their own crimes but it’s moments like these where you’re reminded that are most definitely two types of judicial systems in this country. Not to mention that if Floyd’s murder wasn’t captured on video Chauvin would probably be free today, working as a cop in the same department, working towards the day when he’s able to retire and collect his pension.
But even as Chauvin will be sleeping in a prison cell tonight and for the foreseeable future, police unions who protect monsters like Chauvin are still as strong as ever while Joe Biden’s idea of “police reform” is giving departments more funding.
