President of the United States Donald Trump and his Justice Department are leading an effort to stop eligibilities for Central American asylum seekers according to various media reports on Monday.

The new rule — which was written in the Federal Registrar — looks to make Central American migrants (or all migrants for that matter) who pass through a third country seeking asylum in the United States ineligible for such protections.

The Hill:

According to text of the rule set to publish in the Federal Register on Tuesday, asylum seekers who pass through another country before reaching the United States will be ineligible for asylum when they reach the southern border.

The move marks an acceleration in the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the number of migrants crossing the U.S. border with Mexico and has the potential to considerably reduce the number of asylum claims.

There would however be exceptions for victims of human trafficking, those who have been denied asylum in any country they’ve passed through, and/or individuals passing through a country who hasn’t signed any major international refugee treaties. However, the problem with that last portions (among many things) is there are exactly zero countries in mainland Central and South American who haven’t signed major international refugee treaties which further goes to show this administration’s attempts to single out a group of people.

Why this is total bullshit

Aside from the array of bullshit issues that amount from this new policy, perhaps it’s biggest characteristic that further highlights this administration’s bigoted tone is the fact that asylum seekers looking for asylum in the United States can only seek such asylum if they’re either in the U.S. already or at a point of entry, like the southern border. So essentially again what the Trump administration is trying to do is limit the type of people who have access to asylum in the United States to just a specific group of people — and I’m sure we all know who that group of people this administration is only looking to admit.

In any sense, this new rule which the administration is looking to put in place on Tuesday will likely be delayed with massive amounts of legal challenges brought against it.
