Although the White House has been pretty tightlipped regarding the status of Donald Trump in the wake of his COVID-19 diagnosis, there are some details coming out.
Press secretary and propaganda minister Kayleigh McEnany tweeted out a letter from the White House physician which states that the President is currently “fatigued” and has been given an experimental antibody cocktail to help fight the virus.
Just three days ago, CNN.com ran a story on Regeneron’s antibody cocktail as the company released some early results on tests using the experimental drug saying that it seemed to “reduce levels of the virus and improve symptoms in patients.”
The greatest improvements were seen in patients who hadn’t already mounted a natural response to the infection, the company said.
The results only involve 275 patients of the 1,000 they have enrolled in this particular trial, but appear “very promising,” Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, the director of the division of infectious diseases at University of Alabama at Birmingham, told CNN.
The treatment also showed positive trends at reducing medical visits for the patients, none of whom were sick enough to be hospitalized at the start of the trial, the company said. The numbers in this early release of information were small and the data has not been peer reviewed yet. Only topline data was available in a news release from the company.
Trump also reportedly has a fever which is a common symptom of the virus.
As far as the experimental drug goes though, the initial successes are promising for the broader scope of the general public and the hope that an effective treatment will at some point be available. However, even for a lamen like myself, there have to be more questions raised considering the use of the experimental drug given its limited sample size. One question, in particular, is just how serious is Trump’s condition if it’s determined that he should be given an experimental drug that has yet to be approved for mass public use?
