Elon Musk reinstates Donald Trump’s Twitter account

Elon Musk has reinstated former President Donald Trump to Twitter.

Musk announced the decision Saturday evening after running a poll on the social network media platform that resulted in 51.8 percent of the user in favor of reactivating Trump’s previously suspended account.

Trump had previously been suspended from the platform after the fascist riots that took place back on January 6, 2021, after it was determined that the former president’s tweets violated the platform’s policies against glorifying violence.

Former president Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been reinstated under the social media company’s owner, billionaire Elon Musk.

Musk polled Twitter users on Friday and Saturday asking them whether Trump should be reinstated and a narrow majority voted for Trump. On Saturday evening, Musk tweeted, “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” The Latin phrase means, “the voice of the people is the voice of god.”

Musk had previously said he would not make any “major content decisions or account reinstatements” before convening a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.”

Trump though had skated on thin ice with the company, especially in the weeks after the 2020 presidential election where the 45th president would go on several tirades spewing election denialism while spreading plenty of disinformation across the platform.

Will Trump actually return to Twitter?

Although he has his access back, the question remains as to whether Trump will actually return to his unfrozen account. He has since launched his own conservative boomer-centric social media platform “Truth Social” and recently told the Republican Jewish Coalition that he didn’t “see any reason for it” when it came to returning to Twitter. However, Twitter’s reach as opposed to that of Truth Social, especially after recently announcing a second presidential campaign, you’d have to believe it’s going to be tough for Trump’s ego to pass up the opportunity to reestablish himself on the Twitter platform.
