Facebook has announced that they will continue to restrict President Donald Trump’s account until at least his term in office ends on January 20, 2020, in the wake of the violent insurrection at the United States Capitol Wednesday.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement via a post on the social media platform further indicating that the ban on not only Facebook, but Instagram could go beyond the 20th.

Facebook’s decision comes after Twitter locked Trump’s account Wednesday evening in the immediate aftermath of the far-right terrorism in Washington D.C. That lock was for 12 hours and the President should have full access to his Twitter account, however, it too will be interesting to see what steps Trump’s go-to social media platform takes between now and inauguration day and thereafter.

Twitter has stated that any “future violations… will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”

“There’s this element of all the companies hand-wringing until one of them takes a step, and then in a few minutes, everyone does it,” said Adam Sharp, Twitter’s former head of news, government and elections. “Nobody wants to be the first, and they just take turns on who is going to be the first one to go that time around. Then they all ‘Thelma and Louise’ it and make the call.”

What’s amazing is that as of this moment, Trump can invoke military action against other countries and launch nuclear missiles with the nuclear codes, but he cannot post on social media.
