In one of the most badass performances when it comes to an Olympic Opening Ceremony, French heavy metal band Gojira rocked the fuck out complete with a headless Marie Antoinette to kick off the set.

The band performed their own rendition of the French revolutionary song Ah! Ça Ira along with opera singer Marina Viotti made for an incredible finale to the performance as Viotti came in on a boat with first raised while harmonizing with Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier.

Duplantier even told the New York Times before the Opening Ceremony that it made “perfect sense” for a metal band to play the revolutionary anthem.

“It was a very bloody era of French history, so it was very metal.” Additionally, Duplantier was very conscious of the “pressure” he and the rest of the band felt to represent “the whole metal community on the world stage. The song’s going to be in your face.”

Not to mention a cool touch was the performance taking place on the walls of The Conciergerie which originally served as a royal palace and prison before being repurposed as a museum.
