Andrew Jackson‘s time as the face of the $20 dollar bill is now borrowed.
According to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Harriet Tubman will replaced the former U.S. president on the front of the $20 dollar bill after a movement last year to keep founding father Alexander Hamilton on the $10.
Lew’s reversal comes after he announced last summer that he was considering replacing Hamilton on the $10 bill with a woman. The plan drew swift rebukes from fans of Hamilton, who helped create the Treasury Department and the modern American financial system. Critics immediately suggested Lew take Jackson off the $20 bill given the former president’s role in moving Native Americans off their land.
But Tubman’s face on the $20 won’t be the only change coming to U.S. currency. It’s also been mentioned that in addition to Tubman appearing on the front of the $20, leaders of the women’s suffrage movement will now appear on the back of the $10 dollar bill while Jackson may also make a cameo as on the back of the $20. Additionally, leaders of the American civil rights movement will also appear on the back of the $5 dollar bill which features Abraham Lincoln on the front.
New designs for the bills are expected to roll out in the year 2020.
