It’s Joever, Joe Biden is dropping out of the race to seek re-election for President of the United States.
The announcement was made via Twitter in a one-page letter to the American People where the President cited his “accomplishments”, saying it would be in the “best interest of the party and country for me to stand down”, and that he would speak to the Nation later in the week to elaborate more on his decision to exit the race.
Subsequently, in another tweet, Biden also endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place in the race answering a long-standing question about how he would approach this decision if he did in fact drop out while potentially alleviating some of the potential chaos at the Democratic National Convention next month.
Despite the endorsement, that doesn’t mean Harris will automatically assume the nomination, however, it’s believed that Biden’s delegates at the convention will be more inclined with the endorsement to vote for Kamala when the time comes in August.
Another question in the slew that comes with this unprecedented moment in United States history is who becomes Harris’ running mate if and when she becomes the nominee for POTUS? Kentucky governor Andy Beshear has been one of the names often mentioned as a potential running mate as well as Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, and Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Either way, Biden stepping down was a move that had to be made for the Democrats considering the President’s very apparent cognitive decline that has been on full display these past several weeks, especially during the the first presdiential debate. Biden also faced dwindling support within his own party as high profile figures like California congressman Adam Schiff called for the President to drop out of the race while former house speaker Nancy Pelosi and former president Barack Obama were believed to have been pulling strings behind the scenes to get the 81-year-old Biden to call it quits. Additinally, the party was facing a financial crisis as well with big name donors like George Clooney threatening to freeze money to the campaign if Biden continued to be atop the ticket in what they believed would’ve been a losing effort to Donald Trump this November, something the polls certainly conveyed.
Harris though seems like the safe pick for Democrats. She’ll quell any age argument, have a better shot at helping with the youth vote, and energize voters who are tired of seeing old white men at the top of the presidential races. However, what probably excites the party more than anything is she’ll more than likely tow the party line of maintaining a status quo not offering any material change for the working class in the United States.
