Residents of New York City were mesmerized by a glowing blue sky Thursday night and left many wondering if they were witnessing some kind of second coming or alien invasion.

However according to reports, the cause of all the eeriness wasn’t some Independence Day close encounter but a transformer explosion at a nearby power plant.

Via ABC 11:

Authorities are investigating a transformer explosion at a power plant in Queens.

It happened at the Astoria East and North Queens Con Ed plant.

New Yorkers reported seeing massive blue lights in the city Thursday night following the explosion.

Furthermore the explosion caused scattered power outages across the city and caused LaGuardia Airport to temporarily shut down.

In any sense, this outcome isn’t nearly as exciting as an alien invasion. Nonetheless the pictures and the video are pretty remarkable.
