Adam West, TV’s Batman and mayor of Quahog, Rhode Island on Family Guy has passed away after a battle with leukemia. He was 88-years old.
Via Variety:
Adam West — an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” — died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.
“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.
Born in Walla Walla, Washington, West was an army veteran before becoming an American cultural icon in the 1960’s with the campy TV version of the caped crusader.
Despite the typecast, West embraced his dark knight role for reprises and parodies alike including a new depiction coming out later this year titled Batman vs. Two Face which stars West and William Shatner as Two Face. This is a followup to the Batman ‘66 animated movie Return of the Caped Crusaders.
With his distinctive voice, West also was notable voice actor working as Simon Trent in (aka the Gray Ghost) in Batman: The Animated Series and as Mayor Adam West in Family Guy.
Here’s to a life of fighting crime and absurd city ordinances in Quahog. RIP Mr. West.
